M3U and Xtream Codes are two ways of giving the same subscription to a player app. An M3U playlist is a single link to a list of streams. Xtream Codes is a login (username, password and server URL) that lets the player ask the server for live channels, movies, series and the TV guide separately. Use Xtream Codes when your player supports it; use M3U when it doesn't.
What an M3U playlist is
M3U is a plain-text playlist format. An IPTV M3U link points to a file that lists each channel's name, group and stream address. Players read the list and show it as channels.
Good for: simple players such as VLC, and smart TV apps that only accept a playlist link.
Limits:
- The file can be very large, so loading is slow on weak devices.
- Movies and series often appear as one huge flat list, or not at all.
- The TV guide is a separate EPG link you add yourself.
- Your username and password are inside the link, so treat it like a password.
What Xtream Codes is
"Xtream Codes" has become the common name for a login style used by many IPTV panels. Instead of downloading one big file, the player signs in and requests what it needs: live categories, the on-demand catalogue, series with seasons and episodes, and EPG data.
Good for: Firestick, Android TV, Apple TV and phone players that have an "Xtream" or "Xtream API" option.
Advantages:
- Live TV, movies and series appear in separate, organised sections.
- The guide loads automatically in most players.
- Moving to a new device is as simple as signing in again.
And MAC portals?
Some set-top boxes (MAG, Formuler) use a third method: a portal URL tied to the box's MAC address. You send the MAC address to your provider, they register it, and you enter the portal URL in the box. It works well, but the account is linked to that one box.
Side by side
| Xtream Codes | M3U playlist | MAC portal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Username, password, server URL | One link | Portal URL |
| Movies & series sections | Usually yes | Usually no | Yes |
| TV guide | Automatic | Add EPG link | Automatic |
| Move to another device | Sign in again | Paste link again | Provider changes MAC |
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the port. Server URLs often end with
:8080or similar. Without it, the login fails. - Adding
/get.php…to an Xtream login. That's part of an M3U link, not the server URL. - Typing an M3U link by hand. Copy and paste it; one wrong character breaks it.
- Sharing the link. Anyone with your M3U link can use your connections.
If a login still won't work, see login and playback fixes. To try M3U on a computer, follow the Windows or Mac guide.
